Cool Baby Names Thingies
Baby names are so fascinating. I chose names that weren't too strange, but that weren't popular either. I didn't want my kid having an overused classic name, but I didn't want to go for a pop icon name or some weird name that noone would know how to spell or pronounce.
When my oldest (Caleb) was born, every kid on the playground was Max or Noah. With my second (Julien) they were all Emma or some name ending in -den like Aiden, Caden, Braden, Jaden, Ethan etc. With my 3rd (Ilana, a Hebrew name that wasn't even IN the baby names thingie. How's THAT for original?) all the girls on the playground were named Isabella, Grace, Mia, and Olivia.
And now with my 4th (Sadie, which interestingly was popular in the late 19th century like my own name, Carrie, and dropped of the face of the planet until recently) the names are Ava and Sophia (which I considered, oddly enough).
Why do baby names go in and out of popularity? Why are all the Lisas I know in their 30s? Where did the Lisas go?

I named both of my kids after my Great-Grandparents. I never really heard my son's name outside of my family - and then I realize that his name is EVERYWHERE! (Oh his name is Jacob.) And my son's middle name is Michael - which is what, number one? Ugh! I think it stinks, but what can you do? LOL
I think it's something that needs to be considered very carefully and not just done on a whim because of how the parents are feeling at the time ! It can really effect a child. My second name is a boys name ! (named after my father) and even though It's my second name when those conversations came up as they do as kids, I would never tell anyone. Unfortunately at exam time they take your name from the birth cert and it was posted on the school noticeboard for everyone to see ! (just when you are in those insecure teenage years) I had a huge problem with it and hated my parents for doing that to me. Now I have a different attitude I love it and I'm proud of it and I'll tell anyone, but as a child it affected me so I thought very carefully about my kids names, My oldest didn't even have a name for 2 weeks !
I didn't name my kids right away either Darina.
I think we all go through that stage where we hate our names just like we hate our noses in teenagehood. We like our names as we get older.
I still don't like my name. Mila is just a short version of it.
My eldest is Alexander which I've always liked.
My little girl Elena has a Spanish/Russian name which is my background and her great grandmother's name.
And my third David (very old fashion I know) is named after his grandfather.
BTW, Carrie Sadie is popular here... great name.
My mom is a Lisa - she isn't in her 30's. ;) LOL
Wasn't it the birth of Lisa Marie Presley that caused the surge of Lisa's born in the 70s?
When I named Madisyn, I didn't realize how popular her name was. I am glad I put a new twist on the spelling of her name. I think it makes it more feminine.
Lyndsee which I put a twist on the spelling as well has really decreased in popularity over the last 15 years.
I wanted my girl's names to be unique, but hubby likes the more traditional names. So we tried to compromise ;).
My sister was born before Lisa Marie Presley. From what I've read, celebrity names do play a role but a smaller one than we might assume. Celebs tend to pick the same names regular folks do for the same reasons.
I just find the baby names thing so interesting... like why did Noah have a huge surge in popularity around 2000? Before then I had only ever met one Noah.
I think Elvis had a huge effect, though. After all, he WAS Elvis! He made all the mamas crazy...or maybe it was just my mama?
However, I was not named Lisa, because that is not a name that can be translated into Czech.
