Desperate Housewife Syndrome
Desperate Housewives Syndrome An increasing number of middle-age women are suffering from life-threatening eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. Dr. Chris Freeman, an eating-disorder specialist at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital, calls this trend the "Desperate Housewives Syndrome," after the cult American television series that depicts skinny middle-age moms living like teenyboppers. Since the show started airing in Great Britain, clinics in Scotland have reported a fourfold increase in the number of women between 30 and 50 seeking treatment from disorders normally associated with teenagers and younger women. After watching Desperate Housewives, these women, says Freeman, "think that it is possible to have this glamorous lifestyle and a great sex life if you're skinny" (Scotsman, Aug. 24).
I have to say it is a little annoying that there's so skinny! I still love the show though and you'll always catch me watching it while eating a nice bowl of ice cream... no danger of eating too little here :-)

Oh please...we're going to blame the Desperate Housewives? What about magazines, soap operas and just about any other TV show or movie?
I'm assuming you have the same pencil thin models and actresses being paraded over there.
Interesting cause and effect they came up with. I'd love to see them prove that. People with eating disorders, don't usually seek out help immediately - yet they correlate the increase with when they started airing the show.
Yeah, it's not just one thing, it's all of those things. I've never seen the show so I can't comment on that.
But since when are pencil thin women sexy? Not according to any man I've ever met. All the guys I've known like a little meat on a girl's bones. If your guy wants you to look like a 10 year old girl, you've got a BIG problem.
I know, same thing I thought... please don't blame the desperate housewifes, I love them!
And yes, the same pencil thin models are very much on parade here :-)
It's unanimous it's everywhere!
I agree that no man I've ever known wants a stick for girl. Most throw up when they see women like that.
However, I know it's all in the head of the sick women so it's them that thinks they are sexy not everyone else. When they look in the mirror they don't see what we see. Proving it's a mental disease as well as a physical one.
I've never gotten into that show, but I agree...it's EVERYTHING and not just one thing. We are surrounded by it all. It's sad to know "middle aged women" fall into this crap. You'd think by then you'd know who you were and be happy with yourself :(
Yes, I'm quite surprised myself. I could see it happening in the teen years or early 20s but by the time you're middle aged hopefully you would have a sense of what life's really about... very sad indeed!
