No More Recess? Now That Just Sucks

I've been hearing about this for some time, but the ladies over at Blogging Baby have prompted me to mention this here. The death of recess in 7- 13% of our schools. "Academic pressures" (translation: the "No Child Left Behind" focus on test scores above all else) are the cause of this development.

Well in my opinion it's just plain wrong. If the school system cannot teach children to read, write and do arithmetic in several hours a day for 9 months out of the year, taking away recess is NOT going to fix it! Do any of the people who sit on school boards and make these decisions actually have children?

Gosh the reasons for me to homeschool or seek out other education options besides Public School keep piling up.

We still have recess at our school. I haven't heard of it being taken away in any local schools around here. Thank goodness!

I loved recess.

I remember when my son was still really little and I was doing daycare that one of my daycare kids got recess for his last period. Now how stupid is that? He had to work all day and then get recess right before he gets on the bus.
Then he would get in trouble on the bus because he was all riled up from recess.

A kids needs a chance to blow of steam in the middle of his day, not at the end of it.

They think they have behavior problems now...take away recess and see what they get.

There is a reason they are called children not adults and it's called school not a JOB!

Do schools even offer PE anymore or has that been long gone too?

That's awful, children need regular breaks throughout the day to just be kids.

My son has been through both the American & British education system and I have to say it's a lot more relaxed here.

They get lots of regular breaks through the year so they never go for more than 8 weeks at a time w/o one or two weeks off.

Also, you can take them out once during the year for a 2 week vacation break... which is really nice.

If we were back in the US I think I would homeschool again.

Nell my son has PE 2 days a week still. I'm assuming that all Virginia schools still have it but not sure about elsewhere.

Don't any of those school board people know that children's brains work better when they can run around a bit?

And what's up with the junk food they serve at school cafeterias? When I was little, you were lucky to get chocolate milk. Now you can buy Doritos, Twizzlers and Coke and call it lunch.

Sheesh. The common sense is just overflowing in these government schools.

I just don't understand why the schools have gone down hill sooooo badly :(

Several reasons. The Teacher's Union is partly to blame from what I understand, and another thing is that parents aren't involved in the right ways with what's going on in schools.

You've got parents who will defend their kids when they're obviously in need of some discipline, and in other cases they're totally apathetic.
