Heck No, He Won't Go ( Lieutenant Ehren Watada )
Here's an interesting story: A Hawaii Army Officer Refuses to Go to War. What amazing courage to stand up for something you believe in...but of course, not everyone would agree with me.
I got an error when I clicked on the link. You have to admire people who risk imprisonment and even death for refusing to go to war. You might find this interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jehovah%27s_Witnesses_and_the_Holocaust
I appreciate his courage as well. What I don't like is him being called a coward or unpatriotic. He *volunteered* to be in the military, he is there without a draft or force. That is not someone who is a coward.
Yeah, people are using the fact that he volunteered to say he's just scared now that he has to go to war. I am guessing that when he volunteered a few years ago, he didn't feel the same about this particular war.
I'm pretty sure you have to enlist for a minimum of three or four years, which means you are committed to your duty until your enlistment ends.
I think if you sign up for the military as nell said, you should expect to go to war whether you agree with it or not. That is what the military is there for to protect and serve.
This story inspired me to watch Jarhead again last night.
The situation isn't really the same(or even about the same war), but I liked this movie because it was unlike most war movies. Other war movies, even when they show the horror of war, they still seem to try to share the message how it was all worthwhile. Jarhead doesn't do this.
It's a good watch. Here's a guy who enlisted in the army and stuck it out. What value came out of sticking it out? Doesn't appear to be any value for anyone. Not even his own country. :-(

They must have moved the story. If you search at http://news.google.com and put "Lieutenant Ehren Watada", you'll get lots of stories.
Then go to http://www.technorati.com and do the same search. There are some very radically different opinions from bloggers.

Tsoniki - what does DH think? Just curious.

Honestly, if you join any military you need to be ready to go to war whether you want to or even believe in the war. That's just the chance you take.
Just out of curiosity, if you volunteer for the U.S. army, are obligated to stay for any period of time or can you quit anytime?

I have to agree with some other posters...if you volunteer to go into the military, this is one of the possibilities you must be prepared for.
