How Do You Forget Your Baby?
But one thing I cannot understand... how do you forget your baby and leave it in a car all day?
I've forgotten my purse, my cell phone, my keys, library books, people's names, appointments... but to forget a helpless infant? I just don't understand how these things can keep happening.
I can understand leaving a child behind if you're traveling in a large group. But God help me if I'm ever so distracted that I leave my infant in a car. I can't help but think that people who do this are either mentally ill and hiding it well, or have a secret wish to get rid of their child. I just don't know how else to explain it.

I knew someone who left their baby, in the carseat, on top of their car and started to drive off. The kids in the car had to alert her quickly! Can you imagine?!
I also don't know how this can happen. I mean I guess if you're on your way to work sometimes you're on auto-pilot and if you don't normally have the child with you then maybe (and that's a huge maybe) I can see how there is a slight possibility that you just get into "work mode" on the way and forget about the baby???
I did see one story on TV about a family this happened to and the father didn't seem like he was trying to get rid of his child or like he had some kind of mental problem so I don't know how it happened to them, but it did. It's amazing to me that they made it through that as a couple as well. Would you be understanding if your DH made that mistake? I don't know how I would react.
Ugh... how awful. I don't understand either. Unless she was depressed or having blackouts or something. How can you blank the whole process of dropping your baby off at daycare?
Also, I always look in the backseat of my car when I get in but maybe some people don't?
It's a truly sad story and I don't get it either. We had a case here were a baby and toddler died b/c the grandmother left them in the car a minute to run into the store and on the way there she actually got hit by a car and was unconscious. So she couldn't let anyone know the kids were in the car.
I don't leave my kids alone in the car even for a minute b/c you just never know what may happen.
I have two boys 7 yrs apart. One evening our family was going out to dinner. My dh, 7 yr, and I got in the car to leave. It wasn't until we were 2 blocks away that we remb. the tiny baby sleeping at home! The same people that stood outside the wind. so that we could watch the baby while he slept and not wake him. We knew this had to end when at 6 months he jerked the curtain open to play peep-eye. I only tell you this to say that I really believe in "but for the grace of god go I" I'm sure those parents loved their children just as much as we do some terrible thing has happened I have never left my child in a car, I've always watched them to the best of my abiliy, but all it takes is a split second, a turn of your head the other way and they can be running down the hallway toward something.
