Oprah - American Schools in Crisis

Today's Oprah Winfrey show really opened my eyes. It was called American Schools in Crisis and really showed me what the moms on Mom's Talk Forum are talking about when they say homeschooling is often their only option.

With the education cuts in Canada, I'm afraid we're headed in the same direction.

The schools in Michigan are having issues too! My son is ADHD and instead of working with him, they spend more time kicking him out of school than anything else. I actually moved him from one elementary school to another (because the teacher there was so horrific!) and held him back in first grade & although there are still issues with the new school, they at least worked with him!

I laugh when I hear anything about the No Child Left Behind because it's such a crock of crap if you ask me!

I lean more towards homeschooling all the time!!!!

Tishia my eldest son has Asperger's syndrome and he's had all sorts of trouble in school... although I must say the education system is a bit more understanding here, in my experience.

My eye doctor was telling me that much of the public education system here is trained to see those types of disorders and "treat" them with things like drugs and other less than idea solutions. These kids simply have a different way of learning. But school is so structured that it doesn't allow for that. It doesn't allow them to flourish in their strengths because they are so concerned with limiting the child's "weakness."

I hope we can afford a good private school. I don't want to send my kids to public, but I also am not keene on homeschooling them. Not that I don't believe in it, afterall I was homeschooled, but I know my limitations.
