Feed Me Better

I've been a big fan of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver for a few years now but recently I've been really impressed with how he has taken on the gigantic task of getting British schools to serve better food through his Feed Me Better Campaign.

I think he started this 2 years ago and as of September 2006 here are the new rules schools have to follow when it comes to school lunches:

Deep fried foods can only be allowed on the menu once a week

No potato chips or any type of prepackaged junk food

No fizzy drinks like soda. The only drinks that can be served are milk, water and pure fruit juices

Oily fish such as mackerel or salmon must be served at least once every 3 weeks. Regular fish should be served 1 to 2 times a week.

More variety of fruits, vegetables and grains should be served.

Mechanically reclaimed products such as chicken nuggets should only be served occasionally and they still need to meet a certain percentage of real meat in order to be served (in our school these aren't served at all).

WOW... I'm very impressed, it just goes to show how celebrities can use their fame for a good cause and the things they can accomplish by doing this. My son starts back on hot school lunches tomorrow. Normally he takes a packed lunch since I was never happy with the previous food but now I'm all for it. The plus is he now gets to eat a nice home cooked dessert too, which he never really got with his packed lunch so he's really happy about that :-)

That is fantastic!! The school lunches that my son, Isaac eats are very nutritious and I've been on the PUSH to get Soy Milk offered as an alternative to the whole milk they provide. Isaac has been a Soy boy for his entire life :)

I do know the after school program will serve up chips, crackers or cookies for the afternoon snack before they tackle the homework but I've never seen carbonated drinks served at all.
