Families getting larger?

I don't really consider my family large. I have 4 kids, and to me that isn't unusual. Growing up, I knew lots of families with 4 kids. But when I go out with my young un's, I get stares and comments.

"Are ALL those yours?"
"Are you going to have any more?"
"Boy, you've got your hands full!"

Sometimes I think about having more just so I can be a real punk rock Mommy. I would have to don my JAM t shirt and find my old Doc Martens. But seriously, I don't think of myself as unusual, and if I didn't have 9 months of nausea and vomiting, I couldn't say that I was done yet. I love giving birth, having a new baby and I really enjoy my kids, even when I'm stressed out by the day to day stuff! I also find large families to be quite fascinating. For a time I was a bit addicted to reading the blogs of Mothers of large broods.

I came across an interesting article about larger families that implies that people are having more kids than a short time ago. I wonder is this a post 911 thing? Or are we so materially abundant in this country and everything is going so well on the world scene that we are having more babies? It's an interesting thing to ponder.

I heard awhile back that "3 is the new 2". I wonder if 4 is the new 3?

What do you guys think?

haha.... I think I said "OH WOW" when you told me you had four kids..lol. I guess compared to my one it seems like a lot to handle.

I think big families are cool. My ex has a large family (his dad has five siblings) and it was really neat to get together at the family gatherings with sometimes three or four generations there, and lots of people.. :)

My mom has a BIG family too (9 siblings!) but most of them are not close at all..

Yeah, I would have to agree. I think during the 80s and 90s people stopped having so many kids so 2 seemed to be the usual amount.

Nowadays, especially with a lot of celebrities having 3 or 4 kids it seems larger families are becoming more the norm.

Definitely in Europe it's quite common to have 3 or 4 kids (3 is definitely the new 2 here) but I know in the states it's still a bit shocking to see a mom with 4 kids! LOL
