The Tooth Fairy Comes Tonight - 5 Years Old and a Molar

Earlier this March, Malcolm had a head on collision with his brother causing him to chip his molar. The tooth has caused Malcolm some trouble and been infected several times. The dentist didn't want to pull out the molar because it wouldn't fall out naturally for many years to come, but she felt she didn't have a choice.

Today was the day for the removal of that humongous tooth in that tiny little mouth.

I felt so terrible. I didn't go into the room with him because it's always much more difficult when mom is in the room. The last time we went, he refused to get his teeth done, so I went first. While I was getting my teeth done, the dentist took him and did his with no trouble.

Translation: Sometimes kids listen to other adults better than their parents.

I also think Malcolm can see the guilt in my eyes and that makes him more upset, so I hung back in the waiting room. The dentist said that's would be best too.

As they started to do the needle to freeze his little mouth, I could hear the screaming, "I don't like it! I don't like it!"

I had to leave. I waited outside the glass door and waited for them to call me back in.

Then, Malcolm was plenty pissed off (excuse the strong language for this blog, but that's the most appropriate description). He was yelling at me to go and wouldn't let up, but I had to wait to sign the insurance papers.

The dentist said we should get ice cream, but for Malcolm, I couldn't get there fast enough. Red lights made him mad. Waiting to turn made him angrier.

We finally got to Dairy Queen and he said he wanted a milkshake. Darn it all, I should have known a milkshake wasn't a good idea. When they're so thick and frozen, they won't come through the straw easily. So, he was mad about that for a while and screamed about it for a while. Then, he got it figured out and was happy for a minute.

Then suddenly, he had all this pent up anger that he was really unleashing. He yelled at the top his lungs (while I'm driving):

"That dentist is a bad guy! She is so bad, you wouldn't believe it! I am never going to see her again! Even when there's a good day with a check up only, it's a bad day! I hate the dentist! I hate the dentist! She is evil."

Once he calmed down a bit, I asked him if he had ever heard of the Tooth Fairy. He hadn't. When I explained it, he thought that was pretty cool.

Well, I tell you this Tooth Fairy feels so bad there's going to be a Gameboy game (used, not new) and a dollar under his pillow!

WOW What a Trooper he is and Alice, I can't imagine how your heart just broke knowing he was uncomfortable, irritable & angry! There would be no way I would have been in that room *For the same reasons as you weren't there*.

I hope you share Malcolms thoughts on his 1st visit from the Tooth fairy... after getting a new game, he may want to see the dentist again (LOL)

Hugs!!

Poor Malcolm, it must be a pretty bad experience for a little guy (I mean it's bad enough for grownups) :-(

I'm sure he'll feel better once the tooth fairy visits ;)
