The Holiday Gi'me's
When the kids were young it was easy, I loved getting them the special toy they were wishing for. My parents (who are no longer with us) and I always got together to make sure we covered their wish list without duplicating anything. The kids have never had a gi'me attitude so sometimes we had to work at finding out exactly what it was they wanted. Since we knew what interested them and what they enjoyed doing it wasn't too hard to find the perfect gift. They were always thrilled and still are with whatever they receive.
I'm a bit surprised, but very happy that their other Granny's behaviour hasn't skewed their values the wrong way. Her idea is to buy lots, the more gifts the better and she leaves the price tags on! We know her secret, she removes the sale tag and leaves the regular price tag on. ;) She's always gone overboard and given way too much. The sad thing is that multiple gifts often are not as appreciated as one simple one given from the heart would be. It's not the price tag, or the number of gifts that matter, what really matters is that the gift came from your heart and that you took the time to chose something that person would like.
In today's world with so many things to chose from, being bombarded with advertisements etc. it's hard for kids not to get the gi'me attitude at this time of the year. Talk to your kids, share your ideas and values about the holiday season with them. What you say and do will rub off on your children in the long run.
