I got into a little debate on an online forum for my hometown today. One of the users was complaining that the only cable network in the area was blacking out off and on all day, during Thanksgiving. Well, I decided to point out that perhaps they could have just turned the TV off and played a board game, or a card game, or went outside to get some fresh air and exercise. I mean why do we have to buy into that stereotype that we must all stuff oursleves until we can't breathe and then loaf around on the sofa watching football for the rest of the day? Well, my "advice" was not well recieved. One forum member even said that Thanksgiving is a celebration of American laziness.
Well, I had a great Thanksgiving Day at my house. We had our "turkey party" (as my dd calls it) at around noon, with turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and stuffing. Pretty simple.
Afterwards we played a four hour game of RISK with the little ones being our partners (they got to roll the dice). It was wonderful fun...much better then zoning out in front of the tube.

You're talking to the woman who nearly cried when her new 'TIVO' box broke down the day before Thanksgiving. (Just one day after it was installed!)
We had visions of watching movies all day and they were dashed cruely to dust :(
We would have watched DVDs, TV online at AOL.com, went for a walk, played board games, ect.
"Thanksgiving is a celebration of American laziness."
LOL, i'm sorry but that's just the funniest thing I've heard this morning.
We don't watch tons of TV, I do like to snuggle up with the kids and a few family DVDs but yes board games are fun too and I wouldn't freak out if the TV wasn't working.
Yes that is funny... since when is laziness ever something to celebrate? I always feel yucky if I watch more than one round of TV in a day... as if I've wasted time that can never ever be recaptured.
