Do you care about Organic food options?

Does your family care about Organic foods?

I'm asking that question over on the Family Food Network blog and I want to ask the question here too.

I've read enough to know that I should care about choosing organic foods. But my local grocery store and my grocer budget makes it really hard to care enough about caring about organic foods. Can anyone else relate?

How much effort do you put into choosing organic options?

We buy organic milk and hamburger. It's cost that holds me back from buying organic veggies - our grocery budget is HUGE and it would just get higher if we went organic. I need to find farmers markets and such around here though, I'm guessing that would be better then buying at the grocery store, but I'm actually not sure.

Kelly what a timely post.

I've been reading about how much healthier it is and we just had an organic market open up down the street from us. I browsed through the store the other day and honestly, I can't afford to purchase those foods on a regular basis for me and the family. I feed a house of 6 and it would kill my budget.

I picked up some organic milk and brought that home (lol). I would love to incorporate some organic veggies into our meals but It wouldn't be on a consistant basis.

I think you have to be careful with choosing organic foods. There are issues with mass produced organics vegetables, etc.

I'm not an expert, so I don't fully understand it all but here's a link. There are many more articles available online:

BTW Kelly, you can make your own organic fruits and vegetables. That's probably the best way! :-)

I'm with you Kelly. I want to eat more organic foods, but the grocery budget is so high as it is.

I think next year we are going to have a garden so that will help with the veggies and fruit.

Thanks for the link Alice.

Two things:

1) The most important things to eat organic would be animal products since pesticides store up in the fat. i.e. dairy products, eggs and meat.

2) Some conventionally grown produce has been found to have low or no traces of pesticides, (for instance broccoli) but others like apples are extremely high and are also found to have pesticide residues that are banned in this country.

If budget constraints are the issue, then you can take these two things into consideration and eat as much organic as you can afford.

There are also ways to get organic a LOT cheaper than your neighborhood grocery.

For instance farmer's markets (ask the vendor, a lot of them are old farmers who don't use pesticide), CSAs (google the term for more info, it's basically buying a share of an organic farm and you can get cheap weekly organic food), Co-ops, you can also search www.LocalHarvest.org for local farmers who will let you pick up produce, or do pick your own.

Doing this I've been able to get my eggs organic from a local farm, 30 for only $4. I also get organic milk straight from the cow (the most delicious stuff you've ever tasted and it doesn't give me stomach pain like regular milk), for $4 a gallon.

There are ways to save on organic!

I spend the money and think it's worth it. We cut back on other things but the food we eat is important to us, but it does mean we have to be frugal in other ways.

I put alot of effort into choosing organic options.

If cost is a factor I always suggest in getting the organic foods that you eat the most of.
Such as meat, eggs, and milk.

If you eating alot of foods with toxins please make sure you are getting plenty of antioxidants.
