Do You Know H2O?

Over at Moms Talk Forum, we’ve been discussing water. Sparked by Kelly’s question regarding how many of us have a difficult time consuming the amount of water we should be, the discussion has touched on many different aspects of the drink.

Some members have offered suggestions for making sure we are consuming enough water each day. Using a bottle specifically for water and counting the number of times you fill it each day, drinking a glass of water after every bathroom trip, and even keeping track of water intake as part of a dieting routine.

Others have found out there are now sources suggesting there is such a thing as water intoxication. Normally, this tends to occur in athletes who are trying to replace water loss and over do it. Who’d have thought, that water could be dangerous in large doses? The discussion got me doing a bit of reading up on the topic.

I often wonder if my boys are getting enough water. After reading this article all about water, I now have a better idea of exactly how much water they (and me) should be getting each day. I’ve always heard 64-80 ounces (eight 8 ounce glasses) per day, but that’s not necessarily the case. It’s actually based on your weight and age. Children need more water per pound than adults.

I also now know the difference between the various names given to bottled water and can now make a better informed choice when buying it. Did you know that purified water is not the same as sterile water? Wander how many moms use this for their baby’s formula and don’t know that it really isn’t completely clean?

I have also discovered from the forum discussion and research that water helps with many health issues that a lot of people don’t realize are being caused because they are dehydrated. Headaches, lack of energy, and skin problems such as eczema and acne.

How do you make sure you and your children are getting not only the amount of water you need each day, but water that is actually helping your body instead of leaving you needing more?

I love water and don't really have any problems drinking it, but I question whether we need to count glasses or force water. I mean, what would happen if we forced ourselves to eat when we weren't hungry? Is thirst different from hunger? Why isn't it ok to trust our thirst? We're always hearing "listen to your body", rest when you're tired, eat when you're hungry, etc. Why is it different with water?
And I thought the whole "8 glasses a day" was based on bad science in the first place?
Or maybe I'm just in the mood to debate?
LOL! Maybe not...

I think people are more likely to eat when they're not hungry...than they are to drink appropriate fluids when their body requires liquids. I don't think most of us are so in tune with our hydration needs.

Interesting article.
