Is that what we pay for cable?

Oh my goodness! Recently a friend of the family called because he is now a Dish Network sales guy. We'd looked into it before, but didn't switch for a number of reasons. But since this guy is a friend, we let him come over do talk to us about what they had to offer. But before he stopped by, I had to know exactly what we currently pay for cable so that I could intelligently compare it to what he had to offer.

You know what I found out? We pay way more than I thought. You see, when we moved and set up cable service, we were on a "promotional offer" for HBO and Showtime. Now you might think we should just cut that, but DH loves watching boxing on those stations. Also, when we moved, we didn't have an HD TV. Now we do. That in itself wasn't a problem because the HD cable box we needed in order to actually get HD reception for our TV didn't cost us any more...Until DH wanted DVR service. In order to have DVR service and still get HD reception, we had to get, and pay for, an "HD package" along with it. So after adding basic cable service, plus required digital service, plus the monthly charge for an extra cable box, plus the DVR charge, plus the charge for the special HD package we had to get in order to have DVR on our HD TV, plus the "no longer on promotion" HBO and Showtime cost, we were paying about $118 a month for cable service (plus tax and fees)! Holy Smokes!

Now, why didn't we go with The Dish before? Because, at the time, we didn't have all these charges (DVR/HD package, extra box, etc) and were still on promo for HBO and Showtime, so it wasn't that big a difference as far as cost. Plus, we were looking at either them or Direct TV - one had HD but no local channels, the other had local channels but no HD - we most certainly wanted both. We had to know what was going on with local news, but couldn't give up the HD feature otherwise all the money we just spent on getting an HD TV would have been for nothing.

After realizing how much we were paying for cable service each month, I told my husband that if The Dish can give us all these things for $90 or less, maybe it's time for a change. So we talked to our friend and found out that we can get everything we currently have for $84/month plus tax. That's a savings of almost $35 each month. Needless to say, the installation guy is coming by in a couple of days.

Since I've stopped working outside the home I've taken a number of "good looks" at where our money goes. Since then, we've switched cell phone companies and cable companies. In both instances we now get slightly more than we had before while saving $30-$40 per month in each area. Whew!

We used to have Direct TV and loved that we got so much for a great price. But when we moved, we discovered that every day, about 2 pm, our service would go out because of trees. So we had to switch because there was no place we could put our satellite dish to get great reception.

But I agree with you, if you can get the service, its better priced than cable.

" we discovered that every day, about 2 pm, our service would go out because of trees" - well that stinks. Unless of course you don't watch TV at 2pm in which case it wouldn't matter too much.

Stacie,

Good Luck to you! We have had many friends who have had The Dish and all have had horrible experiences...just like the previous poster said because of the trees. We are in Florida and it rains a lot here, thats also a NO NO for The Dish. Hopefully, you wil have a better experience. We also have all the same services as your current cable company AND cable interent for $120/month. I think we are still on a promo for the showtime though...
