Associating Food with Fun

Aurelia started an associating food with fun thread over at the forum a few days ago.

Many of us moms have used Popeye as a way to get our kids to eat Spinach. The shocking truth many of us found was that most of our kids had never even heard of the spinach loving character! That didn’t stop us from explaining who he is and what he has to do with spinach. Aurelia even turned her Popeye explanation into a learning experience for her son and afterwards he ate that spinach all up!

If kids associate food with fun, they are more apt to eat even the nastiest of foods. What have you tried to get your kids to eat foods they turned their nose up to? Did it work? Did they think you were crazy?

I have also used the Popeye Ploy and it is amazing and funny how kids buy into that spinach story. I also like to tell my kids about beets and culliflower. Neither of them liked these two vegetables so I told them that if they didn't eat beets about once per month(which is about how often I serve it) that there blood would not have enough dye in it to stay RED, and they would loose there color and might even turn transparent; unless they ate at least 2 beets per month! (Aren't I terrible)But they both started eating their beets. Then with culliflower I told them that it was brain food and the way they could know that is by seeing how much it looked like a human brain, and that they needed to eat at least a cup of it every month or they might start forgeting thimgs and become stupid and unable to learn. That also worked in getting them to eat those veggies. Did I do the right thing in getting them to comply? I feel a little guilty but it did work well and DH and I have had some good laughs about it.

We started by taking our son to small markets to purchase the ingredients. We include him in the cooking process. We enjoy playing music while we're cooking too.
He's more open to trying different foods.
