Kids and Computers - How Young Should They Start?

Obviously, times they are a changin’ and kids are learning with and using computers at a younger age than ever.

My 5 year old has a computer set up already. We make sure to always have a watch over him and limit his use. We know at 5, he needs physical activity more, but we also realize that by allowing him to be introduced to computers now and at home in a safe environment with mom and dad monitoring him, he’ll gain experience that will benefit him well into the future.

He tickles me with his computer. Reminds me of when I first started using computers and would be in tears when I couldn't make something work…poor guy. He gets frustrated when things aren’t going the way he thinks they should or he hasn’t learned to maneuver something just right.

I’m curious of other mom’s thoughts on the subject of children and what age is appropriate to introduce them to computers. What do you think? What age were/are your kids allowed to use the computer in your house?

They do in my house. My eldest started at about 2 1/2...just simple stuff (somone gave him one of those toddler computer games where you just have to click anywhere and something happens) and my youngest now who is nearly four started a few months ago.

We have a family computer which they share and it gets pretty hectic at times! We have parental controls set up on it so they can't go on any website they want and of course the youngest can't type in website addresses, we have to put the games on for him.

He also likes to just type big letters in colors on word, LOL.

My little girl can pretty much type in addresses and get around. I think it's good for them, they learn computers in school really early now but they're going to have to keep sharing cause i'm not going to them each a computer or i'll never get them off there!

My son started with computers in school at 5. I think that's the 'norm' now-a-days. I also think that starting them earlier can be a good thing. I wish I would of have the opportunity to learn about computers at a younger age.

I always hear people (adults) joking about how they can't figure something out on the computer so they better ask their child...lol. The funny thing is - kids know a lot about computers now a days so they probably can help their parent....LOL!

My oldest started using computers before he went to school. He was about 3. I think it's one of the best things I could have done for him, honestly.

We started him out with those Jump Start computer games and before we knew it he figured out how to print the wonderful pages full of color on the artist part of the CD. :) Needless to say, I ended up having to unplug my printer to save on ink.

Now at 9 he asks all the time to get online and do research on things he's learning at school. Not too long ago we did research on Jacques Cartier and the majority of the information came from the Internet, but he was quick to tell me when what he learned at school wasn't what we were seeing online!
