Children & Nail Biting

Forum member, Carrie, is in need of some help. Her 20 month old daughter has started biting her nails.

Mom needs some advice or suggestions on how to get her to stop before it becomes even more of a habit that’s harder to break.

Do your kids bite their nails or did they and you found something that made them stop? Help Carrie with your suggestions by posting them on the forum or in the comments section.

Thanks Alice for the shout out. The other day I was painting my toenails and Sadie came up and said "pretty! pretty!" so I did hers. And since then she hasn't bitten her toes.

I'm thinking this might help with her fingernails, but they're too short to paint. :(

Here's the thing: I've had to catch myself picking and chewing at my cuticles so I'm not a hypocrite. In fact the other day I must've been chewing because Sadie was in my lap and she grabbed my hand, threw it out of my mouth and said: "No! Boo-boo!" Then she kissed my fingers repeatedly.

LOL!

I have been telling her that biting her nails gives her boo-boos and to kiss her fingers instead. Sometimes she will do that instead of biting, other times she won't. But it's so cute that she's imitating me saying that. ;)

Nail biting is a sign of nervousness, so maybe you should try to find out what is making you and your daughter so nervous.

Nail biting happens during periods of nervousness or stress. It can also be a sign of mental or emotional disorder. First you need to identify and then eliminate the stimulus that frequently triggers biting urges. It is definitely important to find the root of the problem in order to stop the nail biting.

For me it is nervousness, but I think it's just a habit for her. I can't imagine what she could be nervous about. There haven't been any upsetting changes in her life (at least not around the time the biting started).

It's worth investigating however.
