Birthday Party Etiquette

Aurelia posted at the forum the other day about a birthday invitation her son received.

The parents of the birthday child listed gift ideas in the invite. Some of these gifts just blew a lot of our members’ minds. They were expensive gifts that most attending probably would never imagine giving to a friend of their child.

I can see how a gift list might make things easier on guests, but come on an Xbox? I would have to think twice before buying my own niece or nephew a video game system that expensive, let alone one of their friends.

If it were me, I would probably just ignore the list and buy what I would have if the invite didn’t have one. I don’t think I could not attend because after all this is my child’s friend and neither of them have anything to do with the invite, guest list or the fact that the other child’s parents included it.

What’s your take on giving birthday party guests a gift list? Good thing, bad thing, or doesn’t really matter to you?

I think that would rub me the wrong way. I don't even like it when my kids tell family members their laundry list of "buy me XXX for my birthday."

I would be ok with a list that said "Joey likes Spiderman, Superman, Fantastic Four," etc. - I could see how that would be helpful. But an XBox...no way.

I find gift lists helpful and actually wouldn't be too turned off by that, although I would hope the list is balanced and also includes lower priced gifts. The list might be going to close family members who perhaps have a lot of money - we might not know the entire story... Now if it was all expensive stuff - that would turn me off.

Hey Christine - thanks for the feedback. As Aurelia mentions in the link above, it wasn't family members. This person was just a friend from school.

If it were me, I would totally ignore everything on the list. It's just rude.
