Lice Treatment - Sigh..in our house

I just posted this on the forum, but thought I'd add it here for those who might want to keep the information handy and don't frequent the forum.
Argh, our littlest guy has lice. Ick!
We found a couple of adult lice and a bunch of nits (eggs) upon closer inspection. It's REALLY hard to see. If you haven't dealt with lice, it's been a fun day of:
- Shaving the little guy's head (and his brother's because he wanted it done). This step isn't necessary, but the boys were into it and it makes it easier for me to see what's going on in their hair over the next few days.
- Treating his hair with Resultz which was recommend by the pharmacist. It doesn't use any harsh pesticides, but dissolves the exoskeleton on the bugs. It's supposed to dehydrate them and make the little buggers die.
- Washing all the bedding and clothing from the last few days.
- Washing all their stuffed animals - argh...they have so many. I let them pick a couple after I washed them, but I put the rest away clean until we're sure the infestation is gone.
- Washing my couch cushions which are NOT washable, but I'm going for it. If it doesn't work out, I'll get new ones when we're in the clear.
- Vaccuming the carpets and I completely washed the floors because I was getting pretty obsessive. These things are GROSS!
My Dad & DH were in a panic because they thought getting lice is because of unsanitary conditions and being unclean, but every medical professional will tell you that ANYONE can catch head lice.
Another fact that people often don't know is that lice only CRAWL. They don't fly (which most people know) and they don't jump (which is what a lot of people think). Most transmission will take place from head-to-head contact or sharing personal items like combs, hats, etc.
Anyway - I'm still EWWWWWW grossed out and hope its all under control now.

When my children were in public school, we had a horrible time getting ahead of this "situation".
I found a couple of good things that helped us along.
I ran the cleaned bedding, each day after the big clean, through my dryer for 20-30 minutes.
We also sprayed hairspray on their heads before they left the house (I'd even do this on short hair as it grows back, too!) The spray formed a minor barrier, and I don't know if it did any good, but I'd do it again, if I had to..
We've always had a strict "get that hat off your head" even in the store, and I think they thought mom would kill someone if they shared jackets, hats, hoodies, combs, brushes, etc.. It just got that bad!
The biggest problems that we had were people we knew that didn't follow through and do as much to rid the problem, as we did, and the school.. no one was treating the rugs, pillows, or stuffed animals in the classroom! It was a never-ending hated chore!
Best of luck to you..

Thanks for the tips. I like the idea of putting the bedding in the dryer for 20 minutes each day. A little less overwhelming than washing everything, every day.
Oh how fun - I had this problem with my oldest because we lived with my in-laws and there were a number of kids in the household going to elementary or preschool. So lots of chances for one of them to bring it home. Ugh...my daughter had long hair too.
No tips from me really, we just used that shampoo and combed the stuff out as much as possible. DH never did help, but I didn't mind.
DH gets to do the ticks on the dogs...ugh....I can't stand that...that's gross! Thankfully, we really don't have a problem...just have to check up on them after we take them out of the yard.
I don't know how I made it all the way through childhood without a case of Lice in my house - daycare and all. I always expected it too because so many friends experienced it with their kids.
I don't envy you Alice!
no fun. I tell you it keeps going around in my daughter's class. As you know she just caught it a week before school let out. This is our second case (the last one was 5 years ago with my eldest son).
apparantely they seem to get it more often around 5 or 6 becuase they tend to sit close together and bump heads and stuff.
I'm itchy just thinking about it. I've gotten them twice as an adult - once while I worked in child care, because parents not keeping them at home till the little bugs are gone, and the 2nd time when we think my hubby brought them home from karate.
NOT fun at all. Frank had to go through my hair, after he buzzed his. I went through Eileen's. Joshua didn't have enough hair for them to be interested in him at the time. We thankfully got rid of them pretty quickly.
Coincidentally, I just read an article in the "What's Up Kids" magazine we get here in Canada.
They recommended the insecticide treatments, but from the sounds of it...they do not get the eggs.
They also said that washing all the linens, etc. might make the parent feel better, but isn't necessary. However, other sources I've read say lice can live up to 3 days off the human head.
My head is itchy! LOL.
