Tennis Lessons

My oldest who is 5 almost 6, started tennis lessons today. I never would have thought to put him in a sport that caused me so much angst in junior high gym class. I hated chasing and picking up the balls. ;-)

It was my parents’ idea. They both loved playing tennis when I was a kid. And now they’re taking my son and niece, almost 5, all this week for beginner lessons.

I was looking up some things about kids and tennis the other day and I was kind of surprised at some of the things they say tennis is good for. Here’s just a few of the possible positive outcomes of the sport.

Increased optimism and self-esteem
Hand-eye coordination
Burns more calories than other sports like aerobics and riding a bike
Better motor control and increased agility
Plan strategy and see it through
And if that’s not enough…you can read 29 other reasons tennis is good for you.

With reasons like those…maybe I should give the sport another shot. They say the best time to learn is when you’re young, so who knows maybe my son will love it like his grandparents and become the next Andre Agassi. If not, that’s ok, at least he can say he tried. Besides, how can I blame him if he doesn’t…it’s no fun chasing all those flying tennis balls around.

That's neat Alice! I would never think to put my son in Tennis either and I don't know if we even have it here but it's cool for them to get that kind of experience when they're young.

My parent's put my son in horseback riding lessons and that's something that I'd never have decided to put my son in without them suggesting because I have always been terrified of riding horses! lol

Our son has been playing tennis on and off since he was 5 years old. This past year, he surprised us with joining a tennis team. He really enjoyed competing. Because of his height and size, this kid has a mean righthand.

Now that we live in Las Vegas I plan on getting him into a tennis program.
