Thanks Sunny D for Solving North America’s Scurvy Epidemic

I was watching a commercial that started out quite clever. It was a boy who permanently had his handheld video game with him. When he walked the dog, he tied the leash around his neck and kept playing his game. Wherever he went, he was playing that game. Then the announcer comes on and says something like (I paraphrase here), “There are some things your kid can’t put down and one of those things is Sunny D. The good news is that one serving of Sunny D has a full day’s worth of Vitamin C.”

Sunny D is garbage and to try to trick parents or kids into thinking it’s good for them just because they dump some vitamins in it is so annoying. And it’s not like kids today are suffering from a scurvy epidemic and they’re in dire need of Vitamin C.

According to cspinet.org, here’s the ingredient list:

Water, High Fructose, Corn Syrup and 2% or Less of Each of the Following: Concentrated Juices (Orange, Tangerine, Apple, Lime, Grapefruit). Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Beta-Carotene, Thiamin Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Natural Flavors, Food Starch-Modified, Canola Oil, Cellulose Gum, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Sodium Benzoate To Protect Flavor, Yellow #5, Yellow #6

I don’t even KNOW what most of those things are! Skip the Sunny D, give your kids water to drink (milk too) and include fruits and vegetables in their diet. They’ll be just fine. Or at least please, give them REAL orange juice where the only ingredient is ORANGE JUICE.

Find more ideas for keeping the kids healthy, without Sunny D or any of those other so called “good for them” food and drinks. Check out the Moms Talk Guide to Raising Happy & Fit Kids.

Interesting! Glad to know this because Sunny D is something I'm always buying for my son. I just assumed it was good for him (and myself) because it was orange juice. Guess I should of known better!

My hubby loves this stuff, but I never buy it. Guess I somehow knew it was just junk, but thanks for the reassurance and proof for hubby Alice. :)

I'm sooo glad you blogged about this. I've known about the Sunny D issues for years.

When my son was 2 I gave him some and he just went bezerk... I knew right away that stuff was bad news and I remember reading something about it years ago. I've never, ever since given it to my kids.

But I know that it's cleverly marketed. My mom would buy it and try to give it to the kids and say to me but it's vitamin C it's very good for you...

Shout it from the rooftops, HFCS is such garbage. This junk is no better than soda, it's just not carbonated.
