It looks like I may end up an "
animal person" after all. LOL! We have a cat who has taken up with us in the last several weeks.
At first she was extremely skittish and when we would open a door to go outside, she would run away. But she got progressively more comfortable with her and now she is letting us feed her and pet her.
This morning she stood at the back door and meowed. She's getting progressively fatter, we've noticed. And so we let her in and made a little bed for her. We think she's preparing a birthing spot.
How can I not help a mother in labor?
Right now she's hiding out in a warm spot under my son's dresser. My 2 year old is camped out in front of the dresser holding vigil. She loves this cat! And the cat is incredibly calm with her. Does this mean she had an owner at one time? I don't know anything about cats!
I've been using my Googling skills to try to learn something about birthing cat behavior. Did you know that when a cat gives birth it's called Queening? Isn't that awesome?
Queening. Looks like I might be doula to a Queen soon. :)

We had a stray that was very friendly but when she had her kitties she hid them from us until they were bigger and then she'd slowly bring them one by one onto the deck so we could start feeding them.
Such fun!
Awww that is so cool Carrie! You won't have to do anything to help with the labor will you? Will it just come naturally? I don't know anything about cats either :-)
The mom shouldn't need any help, as far as I know they prefer their privacy.
We had kittens last spring, I loved having them around, they would follow me around "en masse" but my husbands aunt's wanted 3 of our cats so now we only have 3 left. I miss them but the vet bill was astronomical to get them all fixed and wormed, I can't understand why they don't have any programs for that if they want us to be able to fix them, the only reason I could was called CREDIT and I'll be paying for awhile.
But it's better than option 2, which is more kittens as adorable as they are.
One that we have left is black and white too and looks a little like yours. He's huge now, the strongest cat I've ever had, we call him the bat cat because he has a black mask on his face. I will try to get a picture to post.
Amazing story because about 12 years ago DH accidentally adopted a black and white cat (but she's more black than the kitty above)...who ended up just living at his house and then having babies there. I stayed with her throughout her labor and she seemed to be comforted with my being there, but she sure didn't need nay help. She's still with us today!
Cool story.
Me again. Cats are really neat to watch as mamas and since you're a Natural Mama, you're going to love it.
The cat I mentioned in the previous comment actually had a couple of litters. She would take very careful care of them in their special bed, but if she ever felt the need to step out, she'd open up the closet (one of those mirror sliding things) and then one-by-one put all the babies in there while she went out. Then she'd slide the door closed. It was pretty amazing.
I've never seen a cat birth and nurse and raise their young, but we used to breed our family dogs and WOW, what an experience!
Our first dog was a natural. She carried the pups easily, she nursed like a pro, she loved being with them, she was protective, she gave birth like a pro.
Our second dog wasn't so into it. lol She didnt carry them easily, she didn't like to nurse or be around them, she had painful labors where she'd yelp when she'd give birth.
Just amazing how it can be like humans. Some humans are like our first dog and others like our second. ;)
Your kitty is a cutie pie and I love those green eyes...and that little "tude" she has going on. Cat's give the greatest looks ;)
