What Do Your Young Children Listen To?

I've never been big on kid's music. In fact the only "kid's" musician I could stomach was Raffi, and I enjoy his music because he doesn't just stick to kid sounding music. If that makes any sense!
I guess I always figured that if I was going to spend money on music, it had better be something I enjoyed. ;)
Raffi did do a lot to help me survive trips in cars with babies and toddlers though. I could put a Raffi CD in and the fussy baby in carseat in question would start singing.

Mostly my kids listen to whatever I'm listening to. And I have always wanted them to have a good knowledge of different genres of music, so sometimes we might listen to Classical, other times it's some shoegazer band like Radiohead, a troubadour like Johnny Cash or cheesy 80's songs (my 4 year old is a big fan of Cyndi Lauper).

My 2 year old's favorite is Coldplay (the girl has taste!). If she's in the mood for Coldplay and I put something else in, she'll yell: "Not that!". If I don't get it right right away, she yells "Not that! Not that!" until I figure it out. She comes by it honest. I listened to X & Y so much during my pregnancy, she was born humming it. (I swear Chris Martin's voice soothed my morning sickness. Sigh.)

My 6 year old is a big Beatles fan. The other day he was wearing his Beatles T shirt at a wedding shower and one of the women attending asked him: "Do you really like the Beatles, or are you just wearing that shirt?" I interceded and said: "He is a big fan and listens to them all the time."

(I'm sensitive to when my kids are being belitted and always step in.) So then she asks him: "What's your favorite Beatles song?".

His response? "Track 3." LOL! I guess he forgot the name of the song, but he meant Across The Universe.

My oldest is a typical preteen I guess because he likes stuff like Green Day and Social Distortion. I just ordered two Bob Dylan CDs so they can learn about that particular style and era of music.

The only thing they don't like is rap and reggae. I don't dig the former, but I do enjoy a good reggae jam myself, when I'm in the mood.

What do you and your kids listen to?

My 6 yr old daughter likes the sound tracks to Star Wars. And I can tolerate a kids group called Laughing Pizza (actually took her to their concert in Atlanta with a few friends. And now that They Might Be Giants have grown up, had kids of their own, and are now recording kids music, we HAVE to have their CDs! Hard to believe I went to their concerts as a teenager!
