Mommy Dance
I ended up spending some time grooving in the kitchen to Mommy's Alright (Daddy's Alright, they just seem a little weird) remembering back to when I was a teen who spent most of my time at home dancing to the radio in my bedroom. When I was a little older, my best friend and I wanted to start a band called Strawberry Jam - we were big Heart fans - she had blonde hair, I had dark hair, so it was only logical :0)
And of course my best dance memory, dancing in the school gym around grade one with the guy who I was in love with (maybe I was weird, I had a crush on Stanley McNally - my dad called him Stanley Steamer, right from the beginning of school until grade 6, I wonder what ever happened to him). He danced like he was doing frontword scissors, and I wanted to be a go go dancer like Goldie Hawn from Laugh In - what a pair, but at least he danced with me :0)
These days it is a challenge to fully enjoy myself when I'm in the mood to dance, which is almost every time I turn on the radio, because my kids roll their eyes and my youngest has even gone so far as to tell me I shouldn't be doing that because I'm old (who ever said kids make you feel young :0)
Although I did tell the kindergarten teacher that her sister's favourite song was Bad to the Bone by George Thorogood - but it was true :0) To be fair, she did have other favourites, You are My Sunshine has always been a staple around here.
One of the great things about it is that it's great exercise, and I do often go a little overboard because it feels so good after sitting at the computer too long.
And these days it's a chance to be silly, which I usually like to take the opportunity to do. (my kids will tell you this as they probably did seriously wonder about me as I lip sinc'd "you can't have any pudding if you don't eat your meat, how can have any pudding if you don't eat your meat" off of Pink Floyd the Wall the other day in the car - I wasn't driving :0)
Carrie asked in an earlier post what we listen to with our kids. I am lucky that these days a lot of the older songs from "my day" are on the radio a lot, and my kids like most of them, we have fun playing "who did that song" etc. My oldest daughter loves a lot of the same music as I do, she went through a Johny Cash phase with her friend who liked to sing along with her ipod in our van, so did my brother who played it non stop for about 4 years when we were growing up, so I probably know every word, and now that I am not so sick of hearing him and June, I really like them. I used to sing Jackson with my brother, still love that song :0)
So here's a reminder - don't forget to turn on the radio - even if you do seem a little weird :0)
If your kids are still young enough to dance with you, enjoy it fully while you can.
Why not take a Mommy Dance break and go see what's playing?
