Not all police officers are bad people. They don’t all want to make an arrest every time they get in a car or walk on the street. The officer held the baby while emergency workers made sure the mother was stable enough to go to the hospital. The officer was doing off-duty work at the mall when the mother had the seizure. Pictures were taken of the man holding the baby and giving her a bottle. It didn’t seem like any other people were going to stop to help as they were too busy trying to get a picture of the officer. Some people don’t want to assist others, even if it’s for a few moments while there are others who put aside everything just to make sure someone gets the proper care they need.
As parents, there are many things we have to teach our children. There is, of course, the obvious stuff such as looking both ways before crossing the street, getting them in the habit of using sunscreen, where not to go surfing on the internet and other basic safety considerations. Up until now, schools in Salem, Oregon were not allowed to have children bring in and administer sunscreen themselves. In order to have sunscreen applied, it needed to be done prior to the child coming into the school in the morning (at home by a parent) or a note needed to be sent in with a child. The note needed to describe that the sunscreen could be applied prior to going outside. This would either be done by a teacher or the school nurse. State senators in Oregon passed a bill that now allows children to apply their own sunscreen as needed while they are in school.
SuperLawyers says the vote ended up being unanimous and it was declared that sunscreen is not a medication, nor should it be treated as one. As long as children use proper discretion when applying, the lotion can be used in addition to protective hats and clothing. The sun can be healthy in small amounts but the skin and body can experience damage with prolonged exposure.
This bill comes after some concern though, regarding the safety of sunscreen lotions. Some research is pointing out that many of the chemicals in sunscreen can be dangerous and may actually increase a person’s risk for skin cancer. It is recommended that a person limit their time in the sun and use natural alternatives to provide protection such as coconut oil or shea butter, which have low SPF’s but are effective and natural.
There is some solid evidence that American parents aren’t too good at recognizing whether their children are overweight or not. It certainly makes sense that given the fact that parents wear a significant amount of blinders when it comes to their kids, new research has concluded an element to back such a claim. The authors were particularly interested in comparing British protocol guidelines which would classify individuals into different categorical sections, them being: overweight, very overweight, underweight and healthy weight. Bubblews said that these are classes in which parents are able to classify their children.
1/3 of the parents who were researched on in the same completely underestimate the weight of their children, and less than one single percent overestimated their weights. With everything being equal, parents who were male, South Asian, older, or black were more likely to underestimate the weight of their children. The point in which a parent was likely to recognize underweight as being a healthy level of weight was when their children were classified in a BMI range of being in the .8th percentile. Kids in this sample were required to be large before their parents would think of them as being at a weight considered to be healthy again, as opposed to being underweight.
