Philanthropy Hero: How Betsy DeVos Has Changed Lives

Mel Trotter was living on the streets in Detroit all alone. She didn’t have basic supplies like food, water, or shelter. She didn’t have anyone to lean on. However, that all changed when Betsy DeVos got involved with philanthropy in Detroit. She gave funds and helped create programs with faith-based organizations there that assisted needy people with the basics including hot showers, clothing, shelter, social services, driver’s licenses, and getting jobs. Trotter was one of the success stories, as she was able to turn her life around by getting a job, getting an apartment, and doing it all in under 6 weeks. Betsy DeVos has a long track record of giving back in this sort of way. She was heavily involved in promoting Grand Action, which brought government leaders together with business icons in order to solve difficult problems in the inner cities of Michigan counties. She even donated $7.5 million of her own money to schools in order to help children succeed, who she feels so strongly about. Many former recipients of her scholarships and other forms of aid have gone on to become MBAs in business or start their own ventures. Visit the website U.S. Department of Education to know more.

Betsy DeVos and her husband, mainly through their organizations, have given over $1 billion. They gave about $90 million away in one year recently to various causes such as education, faith, health and community services, and even the arts. This is very encouraging coming from our current Secretary of Education. In this day and age, it seems almost impossible to find someone in public office that is actually willing to put their money where their mouth is and donate in true way. Betsy always talks about how much she cares about parents having choices about where to send their kids and that we shouldn’t have to be limited to which zip codes we live in. I agree.

She has been crusading for children and education and other philanthropic actions for 30 years now. Ever since she attended college, she has been heavily involved in politics and making sure people have as many rights as the next person, even if they are from a part of town that doesn’t have as much money. Organizations that she has founded, led, or been a part of include Children First America, American Education Reform Council, Kids First, Education Freedom Fund, Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation, DeVos Institute for Arts Management, Educational Choice Movement, and Alliance for School Choice. Betsy Devos track record is a never-ending list of support for important causes. In this day and age, public education is failing us. But I’m excited to have someone in the cabinet who is actually willing to change education for the better and has a history of doing it. Visit betsydevos.com to know more about Betsy.

ClassDojo Secures Funding, Continues Roll Out

ClassDojo, an app which facilitates interaction between parents and teachers, has secured $21 million in series B funding. This represents a major infusion of working capital and will allow the startup to proceed on pace with its strategic roll out.

The app was originally conceived in 2011 as a way to eliminate the need for parent teacher conferences. The idea was to create an interactive environment whereby parents could actively participate in their child’s educational experience, not just on a bi-yearly or monthly basis, but every day of the school year. By keeping parents abreast of their child’s daily assignments, participation and school work, ClassDojo allows parents to proactively take part in their child’s education.

The latest funding round was closed by co-founders Sam Chaudhary and Liam Don in late 2015. It will be used to continue strategic development. Many new features have been implemented and continued research into new features, driven by user feedback, will be ongoing.

Some of the app’s present capabilities include the instant update and dissemination of class schedules and activities to parents. In addition, teachers can send parents high definition pictures of students’ class work as well as students’ highlights from the school day.

ClassDojo is an increasingly feature-rich, cross-platform app that solves many problems faced by today’s public educators. The app has a built-in translation feature which will automatically convert all teacher communications to the user’s preferred language. It can also be used on practically any device. It automatically sends notifications to parents such as homework assignments, days off, field trips and even videos of a child’s participation in class that day. All this helps encourage students through positive feedback and the setting of clear goals.

ClassDojo is built around a philosophy the founders refer to as “the growth mindset”. This espouses that all children have the capacity to learn, no matter who they are or what their life’s circumstances. This idea is the guiding vision of an app which seeks to instill the love of learning through positive feedback and constructive reinforcement.

The latest series B funding brings the total capital raised to $31 million to date. The founders have settled on taking the app’s future development in the direction of community formation, much in the vein of social networking. Thus far ClassDojo has remained free to all users. In the future, management will look to monetize the app’s user base through offering premium, value added features. Such features may include transaction fees or even directly selling school supplies to parents.

ClassDojo Receives 21 Million Dollars In Funding For Its Communication App

Communication is very important in any organization. The need for communication is vital for organizational success both internally and externally. In recent years, technology has become an integral part of communication in many organizations. The use of technology has helped to improve communication in many organizations both large and small.

In schools, technology has made a huge impact on communication within schools. The communication between teachers and administrators is more efficient and productive. The communication between teachers has improved also with the use of technology. However, one area of communication involving schools where technology has not been used significantly is communication between teachers and parents.

There are various reasons why communication has not been used as much regarding teachers and parents. One of the main reasons is that available technology related to teachers and parents has been lacking in comparison to other areas. This situation is changing because companies are starting to address the lack of available technology concerning communication between teachers and parents.

One of the companies that is providing technology to address the communication needs between teachers and parents is ClassDojo. The company has a communication app that is currently being used in over 80,000 schools. The communication app works by allowing teachers and parents to communicate through the app’s communication platform that is utilized by the schools.

When teachers desire or need to communicate with parents, teachers can send messages to parents using the app. Once the messages are sent, parents can read and respond to the messages whenever it is convenient. The use of the communication app by ClassDojo allows teachers and parents to communicate on a regular basis. There is no need to schedule physical in person meetings that have to be made based on schedules and available time slots.

In the past, in person meetings was the only option available for teachers and parents concerning the discussion of students, but technology such as the communication app developed by ClassDojo is providing many schools with viable options other than the traditional teacher and parent student conference.

ClassDojo recently received 21 million dollars in additional funding for its communication app. The money will be used to add various enhancements to the app to offer more features and capabilities for users. The use of the app by schools across the country has been very positive. As more and more schools continue to use the app, the technology will become more widespread in school communities.

Dick DeVos Is A Strong Proponent Of School Choice

At a recent philosophy round table, some of the most prolific shapers and school reform proponents offered their wisdom regarding public policy via philanthropy. Chester Finn, John Kirtley, Fred Klipsch, Thomas Carroll and Betsy DeVos were all part of the panel.

All of the experts come from diverse backgrounds and have varying opinions of how school reform should be implemented. Fighting for school change is not as simple as one would think. Although a number of good ideas have been brought forth, infighting and politics have played a role in thwarting progress. It is also believed that some of the wealthy philanthropic organizations use money as a way of getting influence.

One thing the experts have all found is that simply throwing money at the situation is not the answer. Betsey DeVos, wife of Amway CEO Richard DeVos, runs a multi-million dollar foundation that pushes for school choice. DeVos says many great things have been achieved by school choice, but the money has to be appropriated the correct way. The DeVos family have given a great deal of money to the voucher programs and many other programs to help low income families.

Dick DeVos is a businessman and co-founder of Amway. He started the company in 1959 and built it into one of the largest direct-selling companies in the world. DeVos are not only extremely wealthy, but they are also run one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the state of Michigan. The DeVoses have used a lot of influence to push their school choice agenda.

Dick DeVos is very conservative Republican. He has given a great deal of money to many Republican candidates including Mitt Romney and Ted Cruz. He ran an unsuccessful bid for governor of the state of Michigan in 1996.
