Medical Billing Out of Control

Consumer Reports announced this week that its medical adviser, Orly Avitzur, recently found out some startling information about how truly out of control some medical billing standards have become across the nation. After the creation of the United States Affordable Care Act, many family doctors, specialists, labs and hospitals started billing patients for services they previously offered for free to make up funds they lost because of Obamacare.

Marcio Alaor BMG has read that some of the charges make sense to many people because the fees involve medical personnel performing services that help patients. For example, patients are typically charged now for phone and email consultations and follow-ups, copies of records and any extra time spent on their care. Supporters of these types of changes note that the time spent writing an email or copying a record could have otherwise been used to offer paid services to another patient.

On the other hand, many medical facilities are also now sending patients bills that are heavily padded for services that should have been included in the initial care or optional services that patients are not told cost extra. For example, some specialists now give patients “information” pocket-style folders that are both unnecessary and environmentally wasteful. Another doctor might direct a patient to specific Internet pages or offer one or two printed pages of pertinent information. Many of the folders handed out by doctors now contain paperwork patients neither need or want.

Major Pot Legalization Advocate Is A 85-Year-Old Texas Republican Woman

Her Son Was Treated With Medical Marijuana After An Accident

Ann Lee is an 85-year-old Texas grandmother and marijuana activist. The Republican crusader recently told the press that she realized marijuana wasn’t the devil that she thought it was all these years. Pot helped her son when he was recuperating from an accident. Since then, she has become a major voice in legalizing marijuana in Texas.

The liberal issue has become her issue even though she is a staunch Republican. She explained the support and the attention she is getting this way: “I don’t know whether it’s my age or the white hair. I’ve been an activist for many years, but I’ve never had the response that I’m now getting”

Lee told supporters the government can’t tell people not to use marijuana if it offers medical relief to patients that can’t get relief from other drugs. Susan McGalla of American Eagle knows that the major issue in the fight to legalize marijuana is its government drug classification. It’s apparent that pot should be reclassified and most people that have done their homework on weed agree.

How Mark Ahn Has Contributed to Important Breakthroughs in Breast Cancer Research

While many who work in biotechnology or who are actively involved in life sciences in the world of academics are well aware of who Mark Ahn is, those who are outside of these communities in the public and private sector are not aware of the incredible contributions he has made to his field. Ahn is a highly accomplished biotechnology professional and academic, and his efforts in both the public and private sectors have been integral in transforming the industry. One of the many areas that he has achieved great success relates to the area of breast cancer research.

The Professional Life of Mark Ahn

Ahn is a highly educated biotechnology professional, and he also has more than two decades of professional work experience in high-level positions. His education includes degrees earned at schools like the University of South Australia, Chaminade University, Aspen Institute and other reputable schools. He also has worked in high level positions, including as president or CEO in some cases, at companies such as Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Hana Biosciences, Genentech, Amgen and others. At each of these and other companies, his efforts have resulted in excellent research and innovations. Notably, at Galena Biopharma he played a role in research and clinical studies in the area of breast cancer research.

A Closer Look at Breast Cancer Research

Galena received a grant from the Department of Defense that providing a significant amount of funding for a clinical trial on breast cancer medication. The trial was in conjunction with NeuVax, and it focused on preventing the development of breast cancer in high risk patients. The funding provided for expanded research based on what was already taking place. In addition, he worked to secure a patent in the United States for the NeuVax breast cancer prevention medication that was being developed at the time. The studies and research are going well, and this is a medication that has the potential to save many lives going forward.

In a biotechnology firm that conducts research and that completes clinical studies, it generally is the work of a team of highly skilled and knowledgeable professionals who work collaboratively to bring about change. However, with a lead role in the company and with a proven desire to change the world through his efforts in all of his public and private roles over the course of his career, it is clear that Ahn will continue to be instrumental in the area of breast cancer research and other areas that he is currently focusing his efforts on.

Turkey or Ham For Christmas Dinner?

Christmas dinner is one of the most important celebrations of the year. During this time, many families have different traditions that they uphold. As long as no one is browsing Skout at the dinner table we’re all good in my family. In days gone by, families had goose as the main course. Those days seem to be long gone, and most stick to a roast, ham or turkey. But which one is the most acceptable dish for the festivities? It really goes down to taste and availabilities.

In my local area, there are hardly any turkeys to be found. During Thanksgiving, there were frozen birds as far as the eye could see. It wasn’t always this way around here. Recently, turkey is for Thanksgiving and ham for Christmas. If you differ from that tradition, around here you have to buy earlier. But what if you lived in an area where they didn’t have the normal things, but rather something exotic to celebrate.

In Greeland, they use raw whale skin for their main dish. Kind of like sushi, this dish is typically taken from the beluga whale. It’s not totally raw, they use a rare cooking process, but I would take ham any-day over this. In Japan, KFC is the tradition for Christmas. In Norway, they roast a lamb’s head and serve it on a platter with several other offerings. The one that gets me the most is the tradition of South Africa. They deep fry worms known as the mopane.

So whether it is turkey or ham at your house, just remember it could be something far worse and less appetizing.

Baby Born on Sequential Birth Day Is a Miracle for Parents

Kristi and Bryan Caruthers, residents of Asheville, North Carolina, have a lot to celebrate this Christmas. Not only are they overjoyed to bring home a healthy baby boy, named Callum, but he has a very special birthday according to Dr. Daniel Amen.

Callum, who was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, was born at 10:11 on December 13th, 2014. The chance to be born on a sequential birthday won’t come around again anytime soon. Callum is also special because he was born after several losses, and an infertility roller coaster.

Last June, the proud parents lost twins who were born at just 22 weeks gestation. They feared they’d never be able to have a child on their own. In fact, they were told surrogacy or adoption were their best options for a healthy child. Kristi became pregnant shortly after losing their twins, and thankfully, Callum was delivered safely and right on time for Christmas. Callum, and his mother Kristi are both healthy, happy and doing well.

He, while having a very special birthday, also shares it with several others. Three babies, born in three different states, were also born at 10:11 on 12-13-14.

Newest Saga of Grand Theft Auto Scandal Outrages People

The most controversial game in history, GTA, was released by Rockstar Games Tuesday, and this newest saga is more scandalous than the last.

The newest version of the popular video game “Grand Theft Auto ” has outraged many people. Besides the cursing and extreme violence, participants now have the ability to have simulated graphic sex with prostitutes, from a first-person perspective.

In previous versions of the game game players could interact with prostitutes without experiencing anything explicit. This time it’s possible to see and hear sex scenes. Another feature of the game allows the participant to “recover” what was paid to the prostitute by beating, or shooting.

“Grand Theft Auto V” won over a billion dollars in its first three days on the market. This new version was released on Tuesday and twitterers say that this experience is “disturbing.”

The saga of “Grand Theft Auto” is one of the more popular video games in history. There you can steal, kill, and even become the hunted. The more crimes are committed, the more you advance in it.

In all GTA games the character performs illegal activities such as murder, drug trafficking, extortion, assault pedestrians, pimping, car theft, etc. Also, the option of seeking prostitutes require their services to be enabled.

If you have kids (like me and Lee Lovett), please be aware of the content in these games before letting them play. At the very least, check out some Vimeo channels, I’m sure there’s videos you can see without playing the game.

“Average” Looking Barbie Is Out On the Market

A new “normal Barbie” has been designed by Nickolay Lamm and has broken with all previous Barbie tradition. This doll does not come with the super thin waist line, pristine blonde hair, and high-heels-ready feet that other Barbies typically have. Instead, it has a normal waistline, stretch marks, average looks- all the appearance of a normal 19 year old girl.

Stickers can be added to put freckles, moles, scars, stitches, tattoos, glasses, mosquito bites, dirt stains, and more on the doll. This will certainly be a different type of toy than is the super-model style of the average Barbie doll.

Perhaps there is some good in the idea since constantly playing with in doll form and seeing on the t.v. “perfect-looking” models can encourage young girls to think they need to look that way too. Perhaps a toy like this can cut back on some of that pressure and help people to better accept the reality of their actual appearance. Maybe it can even suggest to young girls that being beautiful need not entail dressing up like one of those divas who are so frequently featured in the news. If this is the case they should get some attention from angel investor group Slow Ventures.

On the other hand, it seems a little odd to want to put moles, dirt stains, and stretch marks on a doll. It could be this designer went a little too far with the concept. Still, kids like stickers and find it funny to put on and take off these odd additions.

A Mother’s Experience at a Grocery Store

A mother of a child with Down Syndrome was told by a cashier she should have aborted. The mother named Sherry, posted about this encounter on her blog. She recounted what the cashier said to her and how she responded. The cashier made a comment that she should have aborted her child after knowing the baby had Down Syndrome. Sherry made a joke back to her saying she agrees it would have been easier to kill the baby before he was born.

The purpose of her blog is to raise awareness of Down Syndrome. This blog is supposed to let others know how to react to a child having Down Syndrome respectfully. The cashier did not mean to harm her when she made that comment, but maybe she should have just minded her own business and gone back to playing with her Skout app.

Parents of children with disabilities already face a difficult life without being judged by others. Society looks at children with disabilities as being different than everyone else. These children face a life of possible rejection and ridicule. While, it is true that there are now advances in medicine to detect abnormalities not everyone agrees with abortion. Every parent’s decision should be respected and not judged. Instead society should learn how to behave appropriately in situations like this one. Just one comment can be quite hurtful and insensitive if it is not appropriate. One should think before speaking.

Legos Are Also a Girl’s Toy

Warner Bros. is planning to capitalize on the success of The Lego Movie by expanding the franchise. There will be a 2016 film based on Lego Ninjago and a spin-off about Lego Batman in 2017, before The Lego Movie 2’s release in 2018.

Writer-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller spoke to the BBC, noting that one of their goals for the sequel is including more female characters. The original had spunky love interest Wyldstyle and the amusingly strange Princess Unikitty, but the other major characters were male.

Lord commented that the desire for female (as well as minority) representation has been growing in recent years. He specifically cited the success of Disney’s Frozen, which had two female leads with only secondary focus on male characters. As pointed out by Keith Mann, the film was a great success.

Lord and Miller admit that The Lego Movie 2 is still in the planning stages, so there’s no indication yet of what new girls will join the cast. Some speculate that Lego Wonder Woman, who had a cameo in the original, may get an expanded role.

At the risk of spoilers, we’ll note that a female presence was hinted at the end of the first film.

Warner Bros. is also trying to increase representation through its DC Comics movies. It has announced plans for a Wonder Woman film in 2017, and a 2018 film starring Cyborg, a black superhero.
