Dick DeVos, an Entrepreneur, and Philanthropist

Dick DeVos is a Michigan-based entrepreneur and Philanthropist. He was born on 21 October 1955. DeVos has a long business career during which he has worked on executive positions in The Windquest Group, Orlando Magic, and Amway. He is currently serving as the President of The Windquest Group. He went to Northwood University to acquire bachelor’s degree in business administration. Although he attended Wharton School and Harvard Business School, he did not complete the degrees. He has honorary doctorate degrees from Northwood University, Central Michigan University, and Grove City College.



From 1993 to 2002, Dick DeVos served as the President of Amway. During this time, he was responsible for operations in fifty countries across six continents. Earlier he was the Vice President at Amway International and took care of operations in eighteen countries not included in North America. He is credited for increasing international sales to three times and reaching new markets. It was due to his efforts that international sales became greater than the domestic sales in the history of the company. From 1991 to 1994, DeVos served as the Chief Executive Officer and President of Orlando Magic after his family bought the team.



Dick DeVos has a great contribution in several community initiatives. For thousands of underprivileged children living Michigan, he founded the Education Freedom Fund. The Fund provided scholarships to more than four thousand children. He also founded the West Michigan Aviation Academy. It is a high school that offers rigorous education with a great focus on aviation. DeVos has also served on the Education State Board. Besides this, he has also led numerous regional healthcare tasks. He also chaired revitalization of the downtown area of Grand Rapids. The healthcare improvements involved huge funds like thirty million dollars for Downtown Market, ninety million dollars for medical school, one-hundred-and-thirty million dollars for heart hospital, two-hundred-and-twelve million dollars for the convention center, and seventy-five million dollars for a downtown arena.



In 2006, Dick DeVos ran for the Governor of Michigan as a candidate of Republican Party; however, he did not win. He is also an author of a best-seller book titled as Rediscovering American Values. The book was published in the year 1997, and it has been translated into seven different languages. He is also a qualified helicopter and aircraft pilot. He became National Champion sailor twice. He is married to Betsy DeVos who is nominated by President Trump as the Secretary of Education.
