I Hack My Senseo

I love my Senseo.

It saves me money. (I no longer go to Starbucks. I actually prefer my Senseo coffee because it has that nice crema, like a well pulled espresso shot. And as an ex barista and coffee snob, I know what well pulled is, ok?)

I love it because it's not wasteful. I drink one cup in the morning. My Senseo brews one cup.

And the neat little pod is great for my compost pile!

But.

The pods are kind pricey. And they don't come in organic Fair Trade varieties (oh by the way, you know that black writing on Chris Martin's hand that looks like a tattoo? It's not. He writes Fair Trade slogans on his hand before he does a show.)

So I began searching for info on making your own Senseo pods. Some instructions are very detailed and involve tea bags and irons. Others are quite simple.

Putting my fears of major catastrophic SenseoXplosion that I had read about online aside, I felt confident in my hacking abilities, so I gave it a shot.

Success! I am now drinking a cup of decaf Starbucks House Blend, brewed in my Senseo. :)

Here's how I did it.

  1. Grabbed an unbleached, small size flat bottomed coffee filter. (Not cone shaped, and not bleached and not the large size, 'k?)
  2. Laid it on top of the one cup pod holder.
  3. Put a heaping tablespoon of ground coffee in it.
  4. Trimmed the filter's edges a bit with scissors.
  5. Folded edges over to create a nice little pod.
  6. Placed it in the Senseo, smooth side down.
  7. Hit the brew button
  8. Poured in organic raw milk and drank my coffee. Success!

Have you ever tried hacking your Senseo?
