The Charitable Heart Of Dick DeVos

Dick DeVos was born in 1955 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He lived a humble life and spent most of his early adult life doing humble work with his brother. They worked as ushers for different organizations during their annual meetings. This gave him a platform to rise slowly through the social status to where he is now. He is now a successful business person and a billionaire. He is also a husband, father and a grandfather. He is married to Betsy DeVos for 35 years with whom he is blessed with seven children and five grandchildren.

He started his career in business at Amway where he headed different departments like manufacturing and marketing. Due to his hard work, he was promoted to the position of the vice president of Amway. At this position, he was mandated to oversee operations in 18 countries. During his tenure, he was able to open up new branches for this company that leads to the companies growth with a record sales of over $ 4.5 billion.

Dick DeVos is also a sportsman and a sports fan. He acquired ownership of Orlando Magic, an NBA team in 1991. He went ahead and became the president of the club. The club has recorded good performance under his leadership to one of the best NBA teams. He held the teams presidency for three years. As an accomplished sportsman, DeVos holds a two-time champion record of the National Champion sailor. He also likes flying; he is qualified jet aircraft and helicopter pilot.

He also founded the Windquest Group. This is a private investment management firm that deals in technology and manufacturing sectors. Dick currently serves as the president of The Windquest Group. He is also a community leader and has participated in various charitable community initiatives and programs. He founded the Education Freedom Fund, which awards scholarships to children from less fortunate families in Michigan to further their education. Up to now more than 4,000 children have benefited from the program. Dick is also a member of Michigan State Board of Education. He has also seen to success various development projects like the $75M downtown arena and the $90M medical school. He is also a best-selling author of “Rediscovering American Values”, which was published in 1997 in seven different languages.

He started Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation in 1990, where he became the president. This foundation is based in Grand Rapids-area. The foundation offers donations to various groups in the society like civic, artistic, religious and educational groups. Donations to institutions include the Kids Hope USA to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and the West Michigan Aviation Academy through the Regional Air Alliance of West Michigan.
